If you want to be surrounded by lush greenery all year round and don't have enough space outdoors, you can create an indoor garden. Whether you want to grow foliage, vegetables, or both, you will find indoor gardening tips to be helpful. The internet is filled with guides on indoor plants and gardens, so you need to do a bit of research before getting started. It's important that you have the information needed for growing house plants successfully.

Here are some indoor gardening tips:

• Make sure they get enough light. If they don't get enough light every single day, they will become weak and frail. Even if your home or office doesn't get enough sunlight, you can buy artificial light bulbs or lamps. You can also choose plants that will grow well in environments with low lights.

• Give your plants a bath. Seriously. You don't have to do so every day, but it's a good idea to do so on a regular basis. Make sure that there is no grime or dust on the leaves or stems. Clean every spot on the plant, including the underside of each leaf.

• Be careful with the type of soil you use. Outdoor soil can contain pesticides or weeds that can be harmful to indoor plants. Use a special type of soil designed for indoor containers and pots. It's generally cleaner than outside soil.

• Don't forget to add holes to the bottom of the container! Of course, you can purchase pots with holes at the bottom, but if you want to use a plastic container, you might have to make your own. Without drainage holes, the water will collect in the pot, which will cause damage to the roots.

• Some of the best indoor gardening tips concern watering. Water is essential for a plant's growth. Some need more than others, but they all need a fair amount on a daily basis. You should always use room temperature water. However, you shouldn't use TOO much of it, or that will harm your plants as well. Make sure you give them enough water, but not too much.

• Fertilization is also important. Water will flush out some of the soil's nutrients, so you will have to add some more. Many people choose to spray a liquid fertilizer in their plants' regularly. Keep track of how often you fertilize each plant so that you don't overdo it.

These are just some of the most helpful indoor gardening tips you need to consider whenever you grow plants in your home or office. Keep these in mind, do additional research if you have to, and your plants will grow successfully!

"Oh, how I long for a garden of my own!" Does this refrain seem familiar? Many people are cheated of a garden of their choice simply because they do not have enough yard space for growing plants. Sometimes, the weather acts like a spoilsport! What can one do then? Just go for indoor vegetable gardening like many others are doing!

The advantage to indoor vegetable gardening is that no matter what the weather be like outside and no matter what season it be, fresh vegetables are always on hand! It can turn into a great hobby, especially for the physically handicapped who are trapped indoors all the time! The activity itself does not involve much expense. The only qualities required are a caring attitude and plenty of patience!

Popular vegetables that flourish indoors include miniature cabbage, tomatoes, certain types of carrots, peppers and lettuce.

To get down to the brass tacks of what is involved in indoor vegetable gardening--

(1) The basic requirement for houseplants is containers. Now containers can mean anything--readymade pots purchased from the market, old cans, plastic containers that are no longer in use--anything, in fact.

(2) Each container must have some holes to allow excess water to drain out. An ice pick can be used to bore holes in plastic as well as tin and metal containers. Some containers would require drilling with tools. The holes should be placed at the sides and bottom.

(3) Soil type for indoor vegetable gardening should match the particular vegetable being grown. For instance, containers placed on flat surfaces would require a heavier growing medium as compared to pots hung from the ceiling.

(4) Soil can be mixed by the gardener himself/herself, or bought from a store. What should be kept in mind is that the soil is drainable and light in weight. Clay soil is not advisable because it does not drain properly; also, it is very heavy. Experts suggest having a mixture of soil, mulch and sand for beneficial results. Again, garden soil is not advisable.

(5) There is a skill involved in placing the soil properly into a container. Too tightly-packed soil will inhibit the development of roots. There should be some space left at the top for the purpose of easy watering.

(6) How does one select seedlings or seeds for indoor vegetable gardening? Seeds are advisable for the person who wants to do everything from the beginning. The others can straightaway start with seedlings.

(7) Houseplants also need water, same as the plants grown outdoors. There should be no underwatering or overwatering, the amount should be approximately correct. Where indoor vegetable gardening is concerned, the plants can be given water evey day or every alternate day.

(8) Other advantages to indoor vegetable gardening include minimal weeding and more resistance to attacks from pests.

Haven't you always wanted better, fresher, more colorful vegetables from your neighborhood market? You can only guess what those old veggies have been through before their arrival at the store. It's hard to imagine what type of chemicals were used to keep them fresh for weeks at a time and then you're going to bring these into your home where they may sit in your fridge for another week. How much more can a lowly vegetable endure before it starts to rot?

There is a way around this and it's just a perfect idea for the health conscious person... an indoor vegetable garden will satisfy that desire for pure, clean, unadulterated, fresh tasting salad or steamed veggies. You can grow these right in your own kitchen with all the available tools out there.

It doesn't take an agricultural degree to produce vegetables from an indoor vegetable garden; there is tons of information available to assist you along the way. What a great feeling to offer your family safe wholesome food you produced with your new hobby. The tools are available to produce an indoor vegetable garden your own. You can have an indoor vegetable garden on your balcony, (weather permitting) a bright sunny spot in the corner of a room or on a window sill.

You Can Grow A Wide Variety of Produce With An Indoor Vegetable Garden

Your vegetables can be planted in all sorts of containers and areas where that corner needs to be filled. Choose colors to compliment your home and make your indoor vegetable garden blend in with the rest of your living space. Take some measurements of the locations you plan to place the indoor garden and make sure it is the maximum measurement. This way you won't inadvertently purchase a container too big for the space you have.

The lists of containers you can use are limitless. Try using a decorative sheet metal pail, clay pots and even plastic jugs. One of my favorites is the old soup stock pots, these really go well with a kitchen indoor vegetable garden. Just use your imagination and enjoy your new found hobby. Remember, you will be able to grow your vegetables throughout the year, there are no seasons indoors.

Take a trip to the local nursery and explain to the staff that you are starting an indoor vegetable garden; you'll be surprised how much help they will offer. Carrots, radishes, tomatoes and a multitude of other vegetables are well suited for indoor gardening. Make sure to ask about plants and seeds that are specially designed for indoor container gardening. If you're worried about lighting there are many types of fixtures designed for indoor growing. Above all else, enjoy your new indoor vegetable garden hobby. Your body will appreciate it.

Bring nature inside and start an indoor garden to make your home more colorful, but be careful to follow these indoor gardening tips. Plants are so soothing to look at and many indoor gardeners feel that they add that extra little spark to any room. An added benefit is that plants are nature's purifier, taking carbon dioxide out of our air and changing it into oxygen cleansing the air in your home. Mix up your plants; try a few exotics or tropical plants, anything you choose will make your room shine with their fresh beauty and their colorful blooms. To maintain their beauty here are some indoor gardening tips to keep your plants lush and healthy.

Light is the one thing you cannot skimp on. Without this essential ingredient your plants will wither and die. Each and every plant have different requirements so for one indoor gardening tips here is some things to look for when shopping for houseplants. Ask the person at the nursery center how much light the plants you are consider will need. Some plants need direct sunlight while others crave indirect sunlight. For a direct sun plant, place the container near a window that faces south. For indirect plants they can be placed near a window but keep them far enough away so their foliage will not burn. Plants that require little light, like philodendrons, African Violets or ferns, can be arranged anywhere in the room as long as a little natural light filters in.

Indoor gardening tips on watering your plants are always needed. If you over-water your plants you are subjecting them to insects and disease and you will eventually kill it. Over-watering will also rot the roots. Plants hate wet feet. Once you have discussed the watering needs with the nurseryman invest a small amount of money into a water gauge. The gauge will tell you the moisture level of the plants soil. They are extremely helpful in deciding whether to water or not and really only cost a little money, a very wise investment.

Another indoor gardening tip is to fertilize. At the nursery center they fertilized the plants to encourage them to grow so they can sell them to you. If you do not fertilize your plants they will droop and wither. Find out from the center or from the internet what each plants feeding schedule should be. The secret to keep happy, lush plants is to feed them on a regular basis.

You want to keep a close eye on each plant for any pests. If you find pests on one plant isolate it from the rest and treat it immediately. Try not to use pesticides on your plants especially if it is a plant you will eat, like herbs.

A very good pesticide free natural formula for eradication of pests is:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

If you follow these few indoor gardening tips you will have beautiful houseplants that enliven every room. Take time to enjoy your indoor garden. Let it relax and soothe you, after all that’s why you planted an indoor garden.

Happy Gardening!

Bring nature into your living room and liven up the atmosphere by indulging in indoor gardening. It not only gives your interiors an aesthetic touch, but also works as a great relaxant. Who wouldn’t want to be in the company of beautiful plants and flowers after a long day at work.

They also function as natural air purifiers by ridding the atmosphere of unwanted carbon dioxide and turning it into life sustaining oxygen. Whatever choice you may have, be it tropical, exotic or common indoor plants, all of them add aesthetic value to a home and make it look more welcome and cozy.

Following are some useful indoor gardening tips to ensure that your indoor plants stay healthy and lively:

What food is to us, sunlight is to plants. Plants require from moderate to high levels of sunlight to survive. Every plant has it’s own diet levels for sunlight, thus, when shopping for indoor plants, you must look up the instructions to check how much sunlight the plant requires and what’s the best location to ensure they get their feed. Some may even need direct and bright sunlight and hence may need to be placed close to a south-facing window.

Plants that need low sunlight can be kept anywhere indoors as long as they get a minimal supply of natural light. They can also be kept near windows but with caution as too much light can burn them down, so a little distance should be maintained. Few varieties of plants that feed on low to medium levels of sunlight are Boston ferns, African Violets and Philodendrons.

Any list of indoor gardening tips will be incomplete if it doesn’t offer watering instructions. Indoor gardeners all over the world are accused of being too generous to the extent of killing the plants when it comes to watering. Like sunlight, every plant has its own watering requirements and should be subjected to no less or no more than that. Too much water can even rot some plants. A water gage will be a good investment to maintain a tab on the moisture levels of the soil, to keep it in synchronization with the plants requirements. Such gages are an economical means to balance the watering levels of different plants.

Another important indoor gardening tip is to always pay heed to the fertilizer requirements of the plants. For example, an indoor plant like African Violet, looks beautiful when bought afresh, however its leaves start yellowing over a period of time and eventually fall off. This is mainly due to the fact that many nursery owners use special fertilizers to catalyze the plants growth and make them look as much appealing as possible to the prospective customers. However, once bought, if they are not fertilized and taken care of in the same way, they die. Hence, you must ascertain each plants fertilizer needs at the time of purchase, so that you can take best care of them later.

It is always helpful to take professional advise from a plant specialist to know about your indoor plants fertilizer needs. Following all such indoor gardening tips dedicatedly will keep your garden lively and blooming.
